Eating out: Blackmarket Bakery open house pt. 2

Some of Blackmarket Bakery's fall cookies.

Saturday was the Blackmarket Bakery open house. From 2 to 5pm they passed out free samples of their mini pumpkin whoopie pies, pumpkin bread, gingerbread cookies, coffee marshmallows, brittle, and more, while Piaggio on Wheels, Dogzilla, and The Burnt Truck took care of the savory stuff. I ended up buying some yummy pumpkin marshmallows and one of their Marché Noir cabernet brownies.

This gal called out raffle prizes in this awesome homemade cake costume! This may be better than my bacon costume.

Samples of their focaccia, made with wine flour, were topped with caramelized onions and feta.

Dogzilla and The Burnt Truck looked pretty awesome, but unfortunately were cash only. Apparently, The Burnt Truck has sliders that are fried chicken on biscuits with gravy!

Kyle mows down a chicken milanesa sandwich from Piaggio on Wheels.

In addition to treats, you can also buy baking supplies, a very few specialty food items (I saw lavender and vanilla bean simple syrups, and pear fig jam), and cute food-related plush.

Find Blackmarket Bakery in Irvine at 17941 Sky Park Circle, Ste. E, and on Saturdays at the Irvine Farmer’s Market.

Shoe clips from ban.do

I love these shoe clips coming out from ban.do! Shoe clips are a great way to razzle-dazzle your shoes. I really wanted to wear vintage heels when I got married, because my wedding dress had a late 50s/early 60s party dress vibe. But my big-ass size 9 feet wouldn't fit into any tiny vintage shoes. I ended up buying new shoes and adding shoe clips to give them the look I wanted. It worked out great. These ban.do shoe clips look like they will add so much fun to your shoes!

Skeleton Dance

My friend Camella over at The Ladies and Gents Auxiliary has been posting awesome Halloween-related things all throughout October. The other day, she posted this cartoon and it made me so happy! I totally remember this from when I was a kid. Like, when Disney still showed badass cartoons. Check out all the cool stuff she has been posting over at her blog, especially if you love all things dark and macabre.

Apples In Stereo

Robert Schneider of Apples In Stereo modified a vintage moog and a toy called Mindflex (by Mattel) to create what he calls the Teletron. The Teletron is a theremin that you control.... with YOUR MIND. I probably won’t ever do anything this cool. Ever.

And here is a little Apples In Stereo flash playlist. For some reason, I chose all songs that start with “S”, but not on purpose.

Eating out: Blackmarket Bakery open house pt. 1

Blackmarket Bakery in Irvine is having an open house on Saturday, October 30th. I went to their last open house, and it was really cool. Barcelona OnTheGo food truck was there, and the bakery itself was offering all sorts of free samples, which is the perfect way to hook you. One of my favorites was their focaccia, which they make with wine flour. It had such a great texture. This time around, Dogzilla, Piaggio on Wheels, and The Burnt Truck will be there. They will also be having hourly drawings.

Blackmarket Bakery stands out, to me, because of the fact that they have both sweet and savory baked goods. Most bakeries I’ve been to in Orange County only have sweets, and I’m not even sure they all bake them on site. I’ve eaten many a cookie that tasted stale and mass produced at so-called bakeries. But that is not the case with Blackmarket Bakery. There you will find all sorts of fresh cookies, brownies, breads, scones, focaccia pockets (kind of like fancy hot pockets!), and even marshmallows, pastas, and baking supplies. Cakes are made to order. Another thing that stands out is that they offer classes! If I had time, I would SO be into this.

And, a very important quote from their website: “...we believe in using only all natural ingredients. In our shop you will not find any artificial flavors, flavoring compounds, preservatives or shortening. The only exception is food coloring, used in the icing for our quirky decorated shortbread. We like using real ingredients to flavor our baked goods!”

I give a great big kudos to Blackmarket Bakery for bringing something unique to Orange County.

La Sera

La Sera is a side project of Vivian Girls' bass player Katy Goodman. The first single, "Never Come Around" will be released in November, and in the mean time you can download the song for free from many websites. “Never Come Around” has a poppy early-60s girl group sound.

Download “Never Come Around” from one of these sites:

Gorilla vs. Bear
The 405

I saw Vivian Girls (with Best Coast) at Detroit Bar earlier this year and they did a rad acapella cover of “He’s Gone” by The Chantels. A quick Google search and I was able to find a link to it for you to download at TheFader. The original Chantels version is available on iTunes.

File under "super-cute but way too expensive baby stuff that's not lame except is kind of lame for being so expensive"! If your money doesn't grow on trees, these pieces might be better suited for special occassions, like having pictures taken.

Organic Designs by Aggelige / Luna Reece

(image above from thecamp.tumblr.com)

There's a really cute airstream-trailer-turned-shop at The Camp in Costa Mesa called Organic Designs by Aggelige (how you pronounce that is beyond me). The shop specializes in all things succulents. I love succulents. Mainly because they are the only plants I can keep alive, but also they feel very distinctly Californian to me, and they look great in modern design.

Last time I visited, there were a lot of cute ceramics done by artist Andrea Luna Reece, an OC local. I bought a little mustard-colored deer.
These images from Redefine Home Store show some of the other cool stuff she makes. That link will take you to all of her products.

Alexa Chung for Madewell

If I could wear anything, money and current (post baby) body-type permitting, I would add these frocks onto my want-list (along with everything Dear Creatures makes).
