I mentioned in a post a while back that I love gaudy animal-related jewelry and that I have a little collection of vintage brooches. I had some free time this weekend so I decided to round them up and share them.
Most of them come from antique stores. The two deer came from eBay. My favorite, of course, is the pegasus. I found that at an antique store and I felt like I won the lottery that day. The toucan and deer head came from some really bizarre costume shop on Hollywood Blvd that had a lot of deadstock vintage accessories. I actually see those 2 brooches all the time in antique stores.
The corn on the cob was a gift from my friend Kristine, purchased at the Rose Bowl flea market. We've had an ongoing corn joke since we were like 15. I'm not even sure at this point what's so funny about it, but I cracked up when she gave it to me.
I'm glad I did this because I realized I am missing a couple - another deer, and a black carousel horse with the little pole going through it and everything. I also realize how many more I want. There is a certain antique mall I frequent that has sooo many great ones. Lobsters and crabs, cats, dogs, birds, elephants, lions... Must get!
Can you see how I've been inspired by these? The horse head... The toucan...

Eating out: Haven Gastropub
I wish I would have been taking pictures of food at Haven all this time, because I've almost worked my way through their entire menu. Instead, these pictures from Saturday night will have to do. I ordered the ceviche, but my favorite thing on the table was the seasonal mushroom risotto.
Mac 'n' Cheese (black truffles, gruyere, fontina, parmesan)
Ceviche
Right: My favorite Haven cocktail so far - the Lemon Basil Gimlet.
Left: Fries. Right: Brussels sprouts with prosciutto and lemon.
Left: Haven burger (pickled red onions, roasted red bell peppers, wild arugula, St. Agur cheese) with fries and housemade ketchup. Right: Seasonal mushroom risotto (farro, mushrooms, truffle salt, chevre)
Left: Sassafrass (Gin, fresh blueberries and strawberries, serrano chile)
Shephard's Pie (lamb, beef, root vegetables, cream, rosemary mashed potatoes, cheese)
Left: Bread pudding with salted butter caramel ice cream.

Slight bloggity update
My friend informed me that she tried to comment on my blog but had to sign up for Google. Apparently I've had the settings all messed up forever, so you had to log in to a Google account to comment. I am going to pretend that's why nobody ever comments :) Anyhoo, all 30 of you people who sometimes look at my blog... sometimes.... I fixed that.
Make rad stuff.
The phrase “make rad stuff” sounds simple enough, but it means a lot to my pals and I. A lot of the most important friends in my life came from the time we all worked in the Paul Frank art department together. Parker Jacobs, Ben Soto, Arlo Eisenberg, Todd Masters, Paul Meshreky, and so on... Our mantra became “We just want to make rad stuff” as we tried to find the balance between the corporate side of the apparel business, like buyers feedback and things selling vs. not selling, and the artistic side of the apparel business, where we have all these ideas of crazy products we really want to create, but in the end it’s not our decision. Though we disbanded as co-workers (I still work at Paul Frank – and I love it), we still get together and we still say “make rad stuff.”

Wildfox
2 “things to wear” posts in a row makes me seem like I think I'm some sort of fashionista, but I am totally wearing 2 things I bought at Target today. I just really loved these looks. I’m always drawing hearts and fangs and unicorns and cute evil things, and I love black and gold and sparkles. These shirts look like they jumped right out of my sketchbook. I love them.
Emphasis on the shirts. I don't really dig all the long skirts and weird pants. I just can't get behind this bad 90s thing happening right now.
