80 degrees

I am normally not a big fan of summer. Being hot is lame. I prefer a nice overcast day around 65 degrees - “layering weather”, if you will.  But right now I feel excited for warmer weather and grilling and making ice cream in my ice cream maker and doing summery things like the Orange International Street Fair and having our families over for 4th of July. Maybe it’s because it’s 80 degrees today and I am getting a little glimpse into the warm future.

These songs sound summery to me.

Wearable unicorns

Lara (My Milk Glass Heart) showed me this ring yesterday. It's like a dream come true. Except in my dream it doesn't cost $190.

This got me thinking about other unicorn-related wearables.

garlibardy.com has a lot of interesting animal rings

Jeffrey Campbell "Michelle" heel. This is more like a unicorn pegasus, with the unicorn horn as the heel, and the majestic pegasus wing as that ruffle detail around the shoe. I personally own this shoe (the open toe version) in 3 different colors. Because how could I not?
Rabid Fox Silver Unicorn Ring from the Fleathers etsy shop.

A search for "unicorn brooch" on eBay turns up some pretty decent results.

I also got my first ever swatch from Spoonflower. I might be addicted.

Patio project - halfway done

I'm on a little "vacation" right now, home with the lady baby. She's so cool now. She is always doing funny things and is non-stop entertainment. Back in July, while I was on maternity leave, I decided I needed a creative project. I hadn't been around any creative people for a couple of months and I needed an excuse to get out of the house with her. And so began Operation: Patio. And shortly after that, so ended Operation: Patio - incomplete. It's almost a year later and I am just now starting to work on it again!

Pictures to follow, but first some explanations. I think I am about halfway done. The corner when you first walk out looks great. The opposite side of that is still a mess. The person who lived here before us left all sorts of broken crap behind, including this huge broken umbrella that's just laying there, and I just haven't dealt with it. The removal of this umbrella will make me feel 100x better.

I am used to living with tons of color and wacky accessories like vintage robots and a giant ice cream lamp. It's just been the past year that I got tired of living with too much visual stimulation and started to tone it down. So I challenged myself to tone it down A LOT. I even chose pillows with a pattern that I don't think I would normally choose. As I type this, I am realizing how funny it is that my "comfort zone" was robots and giant ice cream lamps...

So here it is - our halfway decorated patio.

The "after" pictures were taken on my phone for me to use as reference while I'm out shopping, so that's why I didn't sweep up leaves or anything. The last things I need to do to this corner are: get a pot for the plant by the door, get rid of the door mat, and do something with those 2 pots hiding under the bench. I also need to buy a table to go between the 2 chairs so we can actually eat out there. Then I need to tackle the other side, starting with getting rid of that damn umbrella!

Since I started this project back in July, all the summer stuff at Target was on clearance to make room for back to school stuff, so I got some great prices.

It needs a little more personality. I want it to feel like a place where you want to put on a bossa nova record and have cocktails. I also think it needs a pop of a different color, but what color? If you have any ideas or know of any cool sites with unique and inexpensive outdoor stuff, holler at me. I am going to try to finish it before May, and then I will post (real) pictures!

A relic from my childhood

I was perusing a book shelf at my mom’s house and found an old coloring book of mine from the 80s. This book explains so much about me! It all came rushing back to me when I saw it, but if I hadn’t seen it, I never would have remembered it. It’s pretty amazing. Based on the copyright date, I was probably around 7 years old.

Look how funky I was about to get with these sneakers I didn't finish coloring. Check out that sweet triangle pattern I was attempting.

FYI: “There is no mirror cat, I tore it out.” Obviously “Mirror Cat” was too dazzling, so I had to tear it out and display it somewhere. I imagine it was probably taped to my bedroom wall.

7 year old me: “This pegasus isn't magical enough – let me just go ahead and add some embellishment.”

Wood hearts

I can't wait to show you why I've been staining wood hearts.

Those round ones turned out darker than I intended. I am going to make some refrigerator magnets for myself with those because I never seem to have enough.

Irvine Antique Market

I went to the Irvine Antique Market for the first time this weekend. It happens the 1st Sunday of every month at Irvine Valley College in the parking lot on the corner of Irvine Center Drive and Jeffrey. For some reason, my expectations were low. But turns out, it was much bigger than I expected and there was tons of cool stuff.

So what did I end up getting?

I got some of those old wooden alphabet blocks to spell out my daughter's name on a shelf in her room. I like how they are all different.

I saw this zebra brooch and thought it was kind of a weird shape and the clasp was in a weird place. Then I found out that this is no ordinary brooch, but a brooch that you wear ON YOUR SHOULDER! Also snatched up this unicorn brooch. It's not a usual style I would choose (I usually go for the ones that are enamel and bedazzled), but it does have a pretty majestic horn and it's peering out from a haunted ass tree.

And finally, I got this unicorn lamp. I still need to get a bulb for it. It only lights up from behind, causing a magical unicorn shadow to be cast on the wall behind it. No biggie. (!!!!!!)
